Social Media for Birders

Huh? That would have been my reaction a couple years ago to the concept of birding and social media. Sure, I used some listservs and forums to get birding news, but the idea that Facebook could be useful for birders would have been laughable.

Not anymore. Social media – Facebook, Twitter, blogging, and the like – has been extremely useful for other industries and groups, and birding is no different.

If you’d like to find out what this social media thing is all about, and how it can be helpful to you as a birder, then you’re in luck. Gunnar Engblom has long been championing its use to birders, and he has now put together a 31 day Social Media workshop for birders.

The workshop is free, and will take the form of posts on his blog. I’m really looking forward to this, I’ve been needing a push to get off my butt and sign up on Twitter!

Hi Amy,I somehow stmulbed upon your website today and really enjoyed it. I am an avid birder too! I wish I had more time to devote to it like you do. Your photography is beautiful!! I have a large woodsy backyard and I work from home. I really enjoy attracting a great variety of birds to my home where I can enjoy them as I work. I also enjoy taking photographs and also painting the birds that I see outside my window. I have had a family of hummingbirds living on my property for 4 years. The male hummer sits on my deck all day long, year after year! Every spring I bring my plants back outside and place my aloe in the same spot because it is my hummers favorite perch. He has a favorite aloe branch that he always sits on! And if I get up early when the sun is still rising, I am fortunate enough to get to watch him preen all his feathers. He is so beautiful! He’s got a mate, too, but she hides until he flies off and then she chases after him!I am going to follow your blog and enjoy your articles. It’s a great site!Robin
